Below are funding opportunities offered by the Institute of Arts and Humanities. 

Faculty

Early-career Faculty Manuscript Support

  • Purpose: To support UC San Diego faculty nearing completion of first or second book manuscripts that will feature in promotion to associate or full professor.
  • Eligibility: UC San Diego ladder rank faculty working in arts, humanities, and social sciences. Applicants should not have yet submitted their manuscript for review with a publisher.
  • Award Amount: $2,000 ($1,000 for a senior scholar to review the manuscript and provide a written report and $1,000 for the author to cover costs related to coordination with the reviewer or publisher.)

Breaking Out of the Classroom

  • Purpose: To support activities that bring undergraduate students into the community to connect classroom knowledge with how it is applied or experienced.
  • Eligibility: Senate and Non-Senate Faculty in the arts, humanities and social sciences who teach undergraduate courses.
  • Award Amount: Up to $1,500

Interdisciplinary Research Groups

  • Purpose: To support research groups that bring together faculty and graduate students participating in interdisciplinary conversations and research agendas on arts and humanities-related topics that cannot be covered in an existing department or program.
  • Eligibility: Have two or more conveners from different departments, one or more of which is based in the arts and humanities.
  • Award Amounts: $500 and $1,500

Innovating the Classroom

  • Purpose: To support activities that use innovative tools in the classroom.
  • Eligibility: Senate and Non-Senate Faculty who will teach an undergraduate course in the upcoming academic year.
  • Award Amount: Up to $1,000

  • Deadline: June 1 & December 1

Graduate Students

Graduate Summer Fellowships

  • Purpose: To support completion of dissertations that relate to one of the following four themes: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, Global Arts and Humanities, Public Arts and Humanities, and Digital Arts and Humanities.
  • Eligibility: UC San Diego graduate students who have advanced to candidacy. Terminal MFA students are also eligible. 
  • Award Amount: $2,000

Dissertation Writing Workshop

  • Purpose: To support writing dissertations through interdisciplinary feedback from other workshop participants and a faculty advisor.
  • Eligibility: PhD candidates engaged in writing dissertations in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
  • Award Amount: $800

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate Curatorial Opportunity (Not offered in 2019-2020)

  • Purpose: An opportunity for students to curate an exhibit in Geisel Library using the Library’s Special Collections & Archives. Students earn course credit.
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students with majors or minors in the Arts & Humanities. Students may apply individually or as a team. 
  • More Information: Curatorial Opportunity - Due to exhibition space limitations this opportunity will not be offered in 2019-2020.
  • Deadline: June 1

Undergraduate Scholarship for Academic Internship Participants

  • Purpose: To support undergraduate students participating in an academic internship.
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students with majors or minors in the Arts & Humanities who have secured an academic internship through the UC San Diego Academic Internship Program and the internship offers compensation less than $12.50 per hour.
  • Award Amount: Up to $1,250

Undergraduate Research Fellowship

  • Purpose: To provide undergraduate students with funds to carry out research or present research at a conference.
  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students with a declared major or minor in Arts & Humanities. 
  • Award Amount: Up to $1,000
